Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

This fragment contains descriptions of seasonal festivals and cult images, and mentions measures taken by “His Majesty” (rev. 6′, see commentary). The tablet is inscribed in cursive script and the surface is badly damaged, nevertheless a comparison with other texts in the corpus allows to improve considerably the readings as compared to the copy and the transliteration in Groddek 2013: 208-15. Noteworthy is the singular use of the double Glossenkeil as content separator (rev. 6′ and probably rev. 20′). In the rev. a divine being of uncertain reading is treated (:zuwaššir? See commentary on rev. 5′, 7′-8′). The colophon identifies the tablet as the 10th of a series, treating multiple towns; the reading is, however, problematical: no other cult inventory counts so many tablets in a series.

Palaeography: Cursive script, signs of the NI-pattern impressed with almost parallel wedges (rev. 7′ and passim).

rev. 5′, 7′-8′: At the beginning of the line the same word occurring in rev. 7′-8′ has to be restored; the end of the sign ŠIR is clearly recognizable. Based on the context, it is most reasonable to assume that the word is the name of the deity treated in this paragraph. The first sign of the word may be read LAM or ZU preceded by a double Glossenkeil (cf. Luwian zūwa- “bread, food”?).

rev. 6′: The combination of two pithoi, one of wheat and one of wine, reminds of a passage of the decree of Ḫattušili III and Puduḫeba regarding the estate of Arma-Tarḫunta (CTH 86.1.A), where the king claims to have instituted two such pithoi for Šawuška of Šamuḫa (Cammarosano 2012: 12, id. 2018: 134). A festival description in KUB 46.17 also has two pithoi, one of grain and one of wine (iv 6), while other cult inventories mention a pithos “of wheat and wine,” see KBo 13.250 obv. l. col. 6′, and “two pithoi” in fragmentary context, see KUB 42.87+ rev. iv 20′.
